Dimensions in ArchiCAD are super basic, right? So clearly not an exhaustive or comprehensive discussion. Hopefully regardless of your skill level a few of these techniques will be new to you, or at least a good refresher.
But I will say this: sometimes you need to cheat within BIM. And sometimes that cheating involves dimensions. So do it in the smartest way; use BIM concepts even with your dirty secrets. Learn more about it here. Did I forget to mention a cool dimension trick?
Leave your Dimensioning advice in the comments. This would be great unclutter the drawing. The remaining node will still be linked to the wall so you can still switch it to and from dimensioning to the core, and the dim will move with the wall.
The string will remain, but then you have no text. I typically do option 1. But I think this is a great question to ask the contractor who will eventually use the drawings.
What does he prefer seeing? What do you all typically do? Jared, you forgot about having different length leader lines across a string. Jared, this was a great video! I have a question, though— When you are dimensioning to the wall, and then hit the button in the info box for the core of the wall… where is that button?! Any ideas? Also research automatic dimensions. Any idea how can I set in the same plan, dimensions less that 1meter to be writen in cm and the ones bigger that 1m to be in meters? It works for Decimal feet only showing inches for things under a foot. The result will be decimal meters above 1 meter and either centimeters or millimeters below 1 meter, depending on the number of decimals you show. So 2 decimal accuracy will show centimeters, 3 will show millimeters.

I have an interior wall set up but I cannot change the wall height or location line - wall height is set top constraint to garage ceiling level which is 10', I have several more levels set up for different ceiling heights but I cannot change any interior wall height for whatever reason.
Also cannot change the location line to interior or exterior, it is greyed out on "wall centerline". Select the wall and look at the properties. Change the Top Constraint drop down to "Unconnected" then you will be able to change the height.
My issue is that even though I have multiple levels set up, I don't get anything in the dropdown box, not even "unconnected". Can't connect to different level and can't unconnect.
Is there a setting somewhere to change this? Can you post a screen shot? The only reason I can think of that you can't see those options is if you're using a Stacked Wall. And, since you're a newbie, I'm guessing you're not using those yet.
See below Even though I have 2 stories and roof story, they do not show in the drop-down. Is there a general "lock" button somewhere I'm missing?
Attached Thumbnails. Does anything show in the drop down? Can you do a screen cast to show what you are seeing? If you open a new project using a default template do you get the drop down with level choices? I opened a default project and couldn't get levels NOT to show as an option, even by moving the level extents or setting them to not represent a building story.
OK - so it turns out that this is not Revit related at all, it is monitor related, but this problem only shows up with the Revit dropdown menus.

All other software dropdown menus works fine. After some troubleshooting today I have figured out that this has to do with this one specific Asus monitor I am hooked up to.
Fortunately, we have two identical setups here at our office - the new Surface Book with performance base hooked up to an Asus MX27A. In the following tutorial the internal walls of the Entry Level will be created. This setting is valid only for the current drawing.
It makes significantly easier to respect the basic rules of the wall cleaning. There is a simple and effective technique for editing vertical internal wall starting some distance from the existing wall. Press it till the wall justification changes to Right. Once this is done, snap to the PERpendicular and specify the other endpoints of the wall. Using SHIFT button is more comfortable because it is not necessary to leave the drawing area with the cursor.

The next step is to change the external walls. So first you create a new wall style by copying the existing one, and you will set its parameters according to your demands.
You need some additional Material Definitions, which the drawing does not contain. Drag the tool to the drawing area, wait till program loads the desired style to the drawing area, and prompt to select the start points. Then press ESC to stop the insertion. With this method the wall has the desired style in the drawing and there are Material Definitions used by this wall style.
The first is to click once on the tool, and the other is only to drag it into the drawing area. The command effects that the component with CMU name and with the same data will be copied to 2 and 3 index components.
Rigid Insulation and the material of the new Brick layer — for now — to Standard.
For retooling click on the Material Definition line of the component, so it becomes a drop-down list. Drop down the list and select from it the desired material. Walls can be placed at any elevation relative to the active story.
For split levels, this means that their base may be offset from the 0 by a small amount or any amount within the story overall height. This can cause issues with display of doors and windows on a plan drawing, if the Floor Plan Display is set to Projected or related options. Symbolic display options will bypass this issue, although they prevent the creation of Clerestory plans since all doors and windows are shown regardless of cutting plane. A workaround for this issue is to create multiple plan views and place them side by side on a layout sheet; each one has the appropriate cutting plane for the section of the building it includes.
Walls can span multiple stories, and the Floor Plan and Section settings allows them to be seen on All Relevant Stories. The Story Level option is the simplest method for designs with a consistent facade elevation for the openings. Windows can be dragged and multiplied across co-planar walls stacked, side by side or separated and of course within a multiple story wall.
Windows that span two stories e. However there is a method for dragging a copy from the lower wall to the upper wall of stacked walls, then repositioning the upper copy to superimpose the lower one, and exploding it to get a clean 2D plan view of the upper wall without creating a duplicate window in the schedule. Tilted walls and Profile Walls may require use of Projected plan settings to give the most accurate and appropriate drawings.

In other words, Sea Level moves up or down not Project Zero. Please note: that elevations and sections have moved in relationship to the 2D drafting work that was placed on them to clean them up. Working for a large Architectural Practice like Plus Architecture, I can tell you that disassociated document sets are not appreciated by anyone.
Looking at how to get a building to relate to sea level in ARCHICAD is an interesting topic for discussion and in my opinion has been prone to interpretation. In other words, they are directly correlated. The most important part to note is that the actual elevation values of any model elements are always calculated from Project Zero and that reference levels are for display and input aids.
Another way to put it is Project Zero never moves up or down; it is a fixed reference point. In other words, the building related to Project Zero does not move, but Sea Level does. In other words, Project Zero is the adopted datum plane for the start of the building model; it is horizontal and commonly assigned to the top elevation of the Ground Floor slab, placed on Story No.
It is of course due to the difference in British and American English: the naming of floors in buildings. In British English, the floor of a building at street level is called the ground floor. The floor above it is the first floor, and the floor below is known as the basement. In American English, however, the floor at street level is usually called the first floor. Go up one floor and you are on the second floor which, of course, is the first floor for the British.
The floor below street level is called the basement, the same as in British English.
How to change scale of whole model in archicad?
In other words for America, Project Zero is assigned to story No. Which was announced on May 2,more than 4 years ago. Reference Levels Preferences. Note: You cannot rename the Project Zero or Altitude reference levels. Note: Reference Levels are display and input aids only. Changing their value has no effect on placed elements, whose actual elevation is always calculated from Project Zero. The exception is Grid lines in Section view, whose position changes with the Reference Level.
But you can rename the 2 provided Reference Levels and change their Elevation value. This is especially useful when working on a building that has split levels. Reference levels can also be used as reference levels for showing elevation Z values in the Tracker.
The answer lies in the simple fact that when looking at Story Settings, there is no need to insert any value into Story Settings to get the model to relate to Sea Level. According to:. The studs and the interior wall boards rest on the top of the slab, while the sheathing, air space, and brick veneer extend down to rest on top of the foundation. One way we could do this is to place a composite structure on top of the foundation, place the slab, and then cut the intersection portion of the slab out of the composite wall structure.
But there's another way that doesn't require solid element operations, and it gives a better sectional representation of the composite structure. Here's how to do it:. Start the Profile Manager.
Click the New button to start creating a new profile. The Profile Editor Window opens and is available for walls. A good thing to do, if you have a standard foundation detail in a separate drawing, is to open that drawing and copy-paste the wall structure into the Profile Editor window. Copy the wall structure into the Profile Editor. Modify the various skins of the Composite Wall using fills. You should use the fills you wish to see when creating a section of the wall later.
Create the fills that represent the sheathing, air space, and brick veneer so they reach down as much as needed in the standard detail. For example, if the slab is mm thick, the bottom of the fills should be mm lower than the bottom of the studs.
Add fills. Note: Watch where you place the fills in relation to the Global Origin shown in the Profile Editor window. Elements placed at the origin will be at the height specified for the wall base when you place the wall.
In this example, we want the veneer skins to extend lower than the wall base. Place hotspots at each point of the profile you wish to be able to snap to when manipulating or working with the complex wall later in 3D. Place hotspots. Turn on the Vertical Stretch design layer. Move the two stretch lines the dashed lines at the top and bottom of the Profile Editor window to the positions that define the portion of the wall you want to stretch vertically in the model. In this example, we want the portion extending below the Global Origin to remain fixed and the structure above the Global Origin to be stretchable, to accommodate various wall heights.
Move the stretch layer lines. Turn on the Opening Reference design layer.
