When you accept input traffic with a destination of TCP port that you just means you are letting the internet send traffic to that port. It has no effect on what, if anything, is listening on the port.
How to Open a Port in Ubuntu Firewall
To listen on a port you need a program set up to do that. In your original case, tomcat was that program. You stopped it so now nothing is listening on that port.
To open it back up as a listener you need to start tomcator any other program that you want, to listen on that port. What program you select to listen on that port is entirely dependent on what service you want to provide on that port.

The iptables commands don't affect whether or not your program is listening, it just affects whether or not traffic from the internet is allowed to talk to that program. If you just want to open up a network port that dumps whatever is sent to it, the program you want is netcat.
The command. This will cause netcat to listen on port and dump whatever is sent to that port to standard output. You can redirect its output to a file if you want to save the data sent to that port.
If you want anything more sophisticated than a raw data dump, you will need to determine what specific program s are capable of handling your data and start one of those instead. You do not open a port. You run a program, and the program listens for connections on a port. So you need to ensure that no other programs are listening to portthen you need to configure your program to listen to portand then you need to run your program. An application such as tomcat opens a port; once you stop that application, the port is closed.
To open it again, you must re start an application that opens that port. You might sudo service tomcat7 startfor example.

UFW is the Uncomplicated Firewall. It manages what ports on your computer can be opened for listening by an application. However, there is nothing actually listening in behind the port. To curl the port, there should be an application that will send a reply. This is typically called a server. This was a great question! Thank You! Ubuntu Community Ask! Sign up to join this community. TheBlackBenzKid 4 4 bronze badges. Active Oldest Votes. There is no program listening on port 80 so it's closed and you can't connect to it. You can use sudo python -m SimpleHTTPServer 80 to start a simple web server listening on port 80, or install something like Apache package apache2 if you want a full blown web server.

You can edit windows host file to make localhost point to that ip so you don't have to remember it. You could set the virtual machine to use a bridged connection. That way the virtual machine will get its own IP-address, and you should be able to connect to the host machine. First, make sure the web server process is running. Type localhost in a browser window on your Ubuntu machine. If you get the page you were expecting proceed to next step, otherwise start the webserver process and retry.
Second, make sure that both machines are on the same sub-network. Third, check if a firewall is running on your ubuntu server. If so, check if the desired port is open in your case. If you do not want to open the port to public access you can configure a rule to accept only traffic from the local sub-net. There you will find ipv4 address of your pc. Then you can use localhost of your pc as. If you have determined that it is your firewall, I would advise adding this rule instead of disabling your firewall:.
You can do this for any port and it will work the same. Even though this is some extra work, you should never disable your firewall even on a secure network. Ubuntu Community Ask!
